2018 Conference Committee

Ji-young Shin, Finance Co-chair

Ji-young Shin is a PhD student in the Second Language Studies/ESL program at Purdue University. Prior to joining Purdue, Ji-young was involved in various professional experiences in the English education in Korea, working as a high school English teacher, textbook writer, national exam writer, national online English writing curriculum developer, etc. Based on her unique professional diversity, Ji-young researches issues in language testing/assessment, corpus linguistics, and their interface within the field of second language acquisition and writing.

Min Ji Kang, Abstracts & Volunteers Co-chair

Min Ji Kang, born and raised in South Korea, is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Purdue University. Min Ji is currently teaching Spanish as instructor and also working as a Conference Co-chairs of SLC Graduate Student Committee. Her dissertation research explores the representation of the wine drinking culture, drunkenness and gender relations in the late Medieval and early Modern Spanish literature. 

Brunella Martinelli de Medeiros Fiuza, Abstracts & Volunteers Co-chair

Brunella Martinelli de Medeiros Fiuza is a third-year PhD student in Spanish American Literature and a teaching assistant in Spanish at Purdue University. Her research interests include Latin American and Brazilian literature and culture, Latin American women writers, and gender studies.

Amy Hutchinson, Program Co-chair

Amy Hutchinson is a first-year Ph.D student in Linguistics at Purdue University. Broadly, her research interests include acoustic phonetics and the effect that individual differences, specifically first language transfer, have in the acquisition of second language phonology. 

Nawwaf Alhazmi, Events Co-chair

Hadi Banat is a doctorate student in the English department specializing in second language writing, multiculturalism and writing program administration. He taught First Year Writing, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes, Communicative English and Speech Communication in Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. 

Libby Chernouski, Promotions & Proceedings Co-chair

Libby Chernouski is a second-year PhD student in the English Language and Linguistics program at Purdue University. She focuses on the study of linguistic meaning across disciplines, drawing from theoretical linguistics, semiotics, philosophy, and discourse studies. She has recently begun work in philosophy of linguistics, through which she has been exploring how linguists perceive their field and objects of study. Libby teaches first-year composition at Purdue and is an officer of the Purdue Linguistics Association.

David O'Neil, Conference Chair

David O'Neil is ABD in English Language and Linguistics. His primary research investigates the evolution and decline of Old and Middle English alliterative verse. Outside the field of metrics, David is broadly interested in the history of English - from the Anglo-Saxon period up to the present day. His work encompasses topics such as linguistic and metrical change, the effects of Greco-Latin borrowing, and the modern role of English as a lingua franca of academic publishing.
